I’ve been thinking about…friendship (Pt 1)

These friendships modelled faithfulness and generosity, consistency and kindness, safety and support.

Today's episode of 'I've been thinking about' is a 2-parter and it's all about friendship and how it has impacted my practice.

My parents, particularly my mother, have modelled friendship and generosity to me in a way that I didn’t realise I’d absorbed until I started reflecting on it as an adult. These friendships modelled faithfulness and generosity, consistency and kindness, safety and support. Whether I was conscious of it at the time or had the words to articulate it, I learnt that friendship was central to life.

We talk about family dynamics a lot, understandably as the primary space that shapes us, but not so much our friendships. Yet unlike family, we choose our friendships which makes them deeply significant - I explore why.
